Economic Development

For almost a century, Southern Company subsidiaries have been helping hometowns across our states grow and prosper. We understand that growing a business or a community is a big job. To help businesses navigate the journey, we have teams of seasoned experts at our operating companies who provide free consultation and services. Our experienced business recruitment and community development teams, highly-skilled engineers, and nationally recognized research analysts support companies and communities at every stage of growth.

Each of our subsidiaries contribute immensely to their local communities’ economy. As one example, Alabama Power has been a partner in their state’s economic development for a century. They play an invaluable role in the recruitment and growth of some of Alabama’s best jobs. In fact, over the past 10 years, Alabama Power has partnered to create $14.7 billion in committed investment and more than 28,100 jobs in the communities it serves.

For more than 100 years Georgia Power's leading economic development team has partnered with state, regional and local development authorities to bring new companies, projects and jobs to Georgia. Over the past decade, Georgia Power has helped to create more than 135,000 new jobs in one of the fastest growing states in the U.S. A recent example of both economic development and sustainability success in Georgia is the November 2021 announcement that Aurubis plans to build a state-of-the-art recycling and copper smelting facility in Augusta, Georgia, creating 125 jobs in the area. Aurubis’ commitment to sustainable development and raw material security will play a role in building Georgia’s electric mobility value chain. From Augusta, the company plans to produce materials found in lithium-ion batteries and other electronics. The Georgia Power economic development team worked closely with state and local partners to bring this innovative facility to Georgia.
